How to match an extension hairstyle to your face shape? A practical guide

Hair extensions and volumizing are very popular hairdressing trends today. This is no surprise, as various extension techniques can achieve spectacular results, giving you truly beautiful, healthy, and dazzling hair.

It's important to remember that increasing hair volume and length significantly changes our appearance. This often requires appropriate adjustments to your hairstyle – cutting or styling methods – to achieve the most natural effect that perfectly suits your face. Changes in volume and length affect the overall perception of your face, altering proportions and influencing how well your hair matches your makeup style, clothing, and more.

Properly determining your face shape and choosing the right cut and styling are crucial. The advantage of hair extensions is that they can undergo various hairdressing and styling treatments, allowing you to personalize your hairstyle.

Guide: Face shape and choosing an extension hairstyle

Oval face

This is a very proportionate face shape, making it easy to choose a hairstyle. Minimalist hairstyles suit an oval face; you can definitely keep longer hair, straighten it, or create soft, natural waves. Opt for extensions that fall below the shoulder blades and are longer. For an oval face, heavy, straight bangs are not recommended; lighter options are generally preferred. Classic and versatile bob and long bob hairstyles, in both straight and slightly wavy versions, also work
well here.

Round face

The goal of an extension hairstyle for a round face is to slim the face, especially full cheeks. The hairstyle should also optically minimize the rounded jawline and chin. For a round face, opt for layered hairstyles. An "artistic mess" style, with an uneven, feathered hairline on the sides, will work well. It's good to have some activity from the chin line, such as soft waves or the aforementioned hair layering. In these areas, we aim to reduce volume. The most important aspect of hairstyles for round faces is to work on fancy cuts on the sides. Asymmetrical cuts and longer side bangs will also be effective. What you should avoid is excessive volume and frizz around the cheeks, and be cautious with heavy bangs.

Square face

This time, the goal of an extension hairstyle is to soften sharp, angular facial features. You can achieve this effect with a light and delicate hairstyle, such as soft, girlish waves. You can opt for bangs that gently cover the forehead, or asymmetrical bangs styled to the sides. Any layers accentuated at the front of the hairstyle will optically round out the prominent features of a square face.

Oblong (rectangular) face

This face shape is very narrow, usually with a high forehead. The goal is to visually shorten the face, so a longer, thick, and heavier fringe that covers the entire forehead is an excellent solution. We recommend shorter to medium-length hair and cascading waves or curls that build volume around the cheekbones and chin. The ideal length is to the chin line and up to the shoulders. Too-long extensions on a rectangular face can make the face appear even longer. Focus on volume; avoid overly straight and heavy-looking hairstyles. A center parting also visually elongates the face, so an asymmetrical parting to one side will work better.

Heart-shaped face

With this hairstyle, we aim to balance the proportions between a narrow chin and a wide forehead. Opt for curls and waves starting from the chin line and build volume from that area. "Curtain bangs" (bangs parted to the sides), side-swept bangs, or light, choppy, natural bangs are perfect choices here. In this case, bangs soften the upper part of the face. For the hairstyle shape – a layered cut is again recommended, e.g., a layered bob to jaw height or a long bob to shoulder height. These balance the lower part of the face. We recommend a side parting.

Remember also that, in addition to face shape, the choice of the right extension hairstyle and cut is also influenced by:

  • Your clothing style.
  • Your makeup style.
  • Hair color and tone.
  • Hair structure.
  • Your personal preferences and lifestyle.
  • Skin complexion, skin type, and eye color.
