How to oil hair extensions?

Just like natural hair, hair extensions require proper care and treatment. One of the recommended treatments is hair oiling. But what exactly is it, and is it suitable for hair extensions?

Hair oiling is a care method that can take different forms. It may involve applying oil along the entire length of the hair, directly onto the scalp, only on certain parts (e.g., from ear level down to the ends), or solely on the tips.

In the case of long hair, we recommend oiling just the ends or the hair below the bonding points to avoid applying the oil to the actual bonds. Oily products like these can weaken the bonds, loosen them, and shorten the lifespan of the extensions.

When it comes to hair extensions, special oils and even leave-in oils can be used, as long as you avoid the bonds. This is the key condition.

What are the benefits of hair oiling?

This treatment is mainly aimed at moisturizing the hair, smoothing it, and giving it a beautiful shine. Oils are rich in nutrients and provide a reliable way to regenerate and strengthen the hair. Hair regains elasticity, softness, and bounce. It's also easier to detangle, doesn’t get frizzy, and doesn’t tangle—which is especially important for extensions.

This reduces the risk of mechanical damage during brushing, for example. Additionally, oils protect hair from changing weather conditions, including harmful UV rays and high temperatures.

Oiling the ends of hair extensions also replenishes their structure, particularly in the most damaged areas—the tips—which are usually in worse condition than the rest of the hair.

Types of hair oils and their purpose

Hair oils are generally divided into three categories:

  • Low-porosity oils – for the least damaged hair; recommended options include coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter.
  • Medium-porosity oils – for hair in moderately damaged condition; great choices are olive oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, and the ever-popular argan oil.
  • High-porosity oilsflaxseed oil, pumpkin seed oil, evening primrose oil, and also argan oil (again).

What oils are best for hair extensions?

For hair extensions, we particularly recommend flaxseed oil and argan oil due to their comprehensive strengthening, nourishing, and moisturizing properties. These oils are ideal for treating split or dry ends and are suitable for both natural and extension hair.
